Alpine Lakes In the Snowy Mountains
There is something magic about alpine lakes. We have our own alpine lake in front of the chalet but we have at least three others for you to visit.
It's an incredible hike out of Charlottes Pass to Blue Lake along The Main Range Walk. This is an iconic hike that promises stunning views of the mountains, beautiful unique flora and a complete sense of awe in what Mother Nature has created.
Rainbow Lake walking track is a short and easy walk for the whole family, with great opportunities for picnicking, bird watching, and enjoying the fresh mountain air. It is close by and 2.5km return.
Illawong walk is a gorgeous 5km return walk. It begins in the charming Guthega Village and follows along the Snowy River through alpine heath and towering, majestic snow gums, all the way up to Illawong Hut, one of the oldest buildings still standing in the park. Walk or swim in the cool waters of Snowy River when the weather is hot, or picnic among the wildflowers of alpine mint, billy buttons, and native yam daisies, just to name a few.
Road Cycling in the Snowy Mountains
The Snowy Mountains region is an amazing place to enjoy road cycling at every fitness level. The quality road surfaces, incredible views, light traffic and challenging climbs are all a great attraction for roads cyclists. Here are 3 to look at depending on your fitness level.
- Col De Kosciusczko is a world classic ride up to Charlottes Pass Lookout. From Sponars Chalet it is 34.4 km return. Great altitude training and of course you can go down before you go up.
- Berridale Loop 60km. Leaving from the Eucumbene Road bus stop, head out 16km and turn right onto Rocky Plains Road then right at the next intersection (a further 20km) at Middlingbank Road which will take you into Berridale. Turn right in Berridale at Kosciuszko Road and return to your car via Varney’s Range. A moderate loop with some enjoyable flat sections.
The Dalgety Loop is a mostly undulating 85km loop set amongst the farmland with some moderate climbs. Take the Barry Way at the big round-a-bout in Jindabyne and about 4km south along the road (the Station turn-off), turn left onto Snowy River Way towards Dalgety. Along the way is a very steep downhill section (tough if you do the loop in reverse) before a steady undulating ride to the Dalgety township. In Dalgety, turn left after the bridge and head to Berridale then left in Berridale and back to Jindabyne on Kosciuszko Road.
Walking Back In Time Hotel Kosciusko
Australia's first planned alpine resort was built by the NSW government on this site known as Hotel Kosciusko. The official opening was 7th June 1909. It was big and it was grand with golf, tennis, fishing, croquet, ice skating and 17 ski runs. The present day Sponars Chalet was constructed from the staff quarters of the Hotel Kosciusko. Pick up a map from reception and follow a walk back in time to catch a glimpse of the pomp and grandeur.
You may like to find out a bit more with the newly published book 'Hotel Kosciusko'. Researched and written by Donald A. Johnston, Heritage Architect, for the Perisher Historical Society, it contains over 300 pages detailing the Hotel’s life, many rare photographs, maps, brochures, architectural plans and Hotel memorabilia. Wild Brumby Distillery
Situated in the heart of the Australian high country between Jindabyne and Thredbo, Wildbrumby is the highest distillery in Australia. They offer free schnapps & gin tasting daily 10am-5pm.
There was movement everywhere, for the word had passed around. That the beer from Jindy brewing was now here
And the lovers of the hops & malt were flocking to the town
For the sound of glasses clinking full of beer
Enjoy a pilsner, a lager, or even a pale ale
All brewed from the fresh local water
After hiking, biking, skiing, fishing or a sail
The quality of the brew will never falter
The mountains, the lake, its all here you know…
And the beauty of beer in its natural surrounds
Its as refreshing and as pure as the wind driven snow
No doubt you will absolutely love what you have found!!
